Continuing Education Requirements for Alabama Electrical Contractors

Alabama Electrical Contractor’s New Continuing Education Rule

New Continuing Education Rule for Alabama Electrical Contractors

Beginning January 1, 2015, every licensed electrical contractor must complete 14 hours of approved continuing education every two (2) years from their original issuance date to renew their license.  This does NOT include journeymen.  Licensed journeymen are currently NOT required to submit continuing education hours to renew their license.

The new continuing education rule states that licensed electrical contractors and provisional electrical contractors will be required to obtain 14 continuing education hours during each two-year licensing period beginning January 1, 2013, however, the Board allowed the 2013 and 2014 licensees to renew without having to submit proof of 14 hours.  At least seven (7) hours must be in NEC/NFPA courses.

There are three exceptions to the rule:

  1.  Contractors that became qualified by examination during the 24-month period immediately preceding the license renewal date will not have to complete the 14 hours until the next renewal cycle.

  2. Contractors on inactive status

  3. Contractors presenting or instructing at least 14 hours of approved courses.

Renewal notices will be sent to Alabama electrical contractors and journeymen 30 days prior to the expiration of their license.  The electrical contractor renewal fee is $150.00, provisional electrical contractor fee is $75.00, and the journeyman electrician renewal fee is $35.00.  You can renew online through the Alabama Electrical Contractors Board web site.

NOTE Failure of a licensee to document completion of the continuing education requirements to the satisfaction of the Board shall be grounds for disciplinary action, including denial of the renewal of a license or revocation of the license.
