Alaska Electrical License Renewal Information

Two Deadlines for Continuing Education and Renewal

The State of Alaska has a set of requirements for Electrical Administrators that are governed by the Department of Commerce, and a different set of requirements for Journeyman Electricians that are governed by the Department of Labor and Workforce Development.  Electrical Administrators are licensed whereas Journeymen Electricians are issued Certificates of Fitness.

Alaska Electrical Administrators

Alaska Electrical Administrators are required to complete at least 8 hours of continuing education every two years in order to renew their license. The current two-year electrical administrator licensing cycle ends December 31st 2015.   This education can be taken in a classroom or online, but the content must be approved by the Department of Commerce and must cover the 2014 National Electrical Code or National Electrical Safety Code.

All Alaska licensed electrical contractors will receive a renewal application in the mail with a bar code in the upper right hand corner of the first page.  This is a Biennial Electrical Administrator License Renewal form.  This form cannot be duplicated for another electrician’s use.  The bar code is specific to an electrical licensee and license number.  Forms without the bar code are available on the Department website at

Electrical Contractor Licensing Fees:

Renewal of Active License 1 through 1931 is $200.00

Prorated Renewal of Active License 1932 and above is $100.00

Journeymen Electricians

Alaska Journeymen Electricians are required to complete at least 16 hours of continuing education every two years in order to renew their Certificate of Fitness. The department will renew a standard certificate of fitness within 90 days before or after the expiration of the certificate.   The 16 hours of continued education must be taken during the 24-month period before the request to renew the certificate and at least 8 of the hours must cover significant changes or updates to the National Electrical Code (NEC).  The other 8 can be in NEC or it can be in industry related topics.

Journeymen Electrical Renewal Fee

Biennial Renewal is $200.00.
Re-application fee of $50.00 is required if the license has expired 90 days or longer

NOTE:  It is illegal for Electrical Administrators to practice if their license has lapsed.  THERE IS NO GRACE PERIOD.  Be sure to submit your renewal application as soon as possible to allow for the 3 to 4 weeks that it takes the Department to process the form.

The division will randomly audit a percentage of the license renewals to confirm that the required continued education has been completed.  If you are selected for audit, you will be notified and required to submit proof of completion of the required continuing education.  You must save your documents for at least four years so you can respond to audits.
