Building design Real World Example:

Let’s say a family owned a beach front property that was not only financially valuable but the source of many precious family memories. Unfortunately, the aging building was showing severe signs of movement, including rolling floors, buckling flooring and a sloping ridge line.  After demolition of the building, borings revealed that twenty feet below the surface laid a twenty-foot-thick layer of crushed seashells.  In order to rebuild the treasured home, the decision was made to drive wood piles sixty feet into the ground. The neighboring properties had to be monitored for damaging vibrations and the pile driving rig had to be supported on a mat in order to prevent sinking into the same abyss. After successfully driving the piles, a concrete grade beam was constructed, spanning between piles to support a new two story, brick home measuring nearly six thousand square feet in area. The family was able to maintain their favored site while gaining a new and stable building!

These same professionals will play a pivotal role in essential decisions such as structural systems.
  • Creating an Envelope and Floor Plate: the interaction between the floor plate and the envelope is like a dance; each must respond to the other reflecting decisions about materials, circulation and building use.
  • HVAC, Plumbing and Electrical Systems: Buildings are not just boxes. We expect mechanical and electrical systems that make our lives comfortable.  These systems are often complex and require forethought.
  • Specialty Materials, Functions and Specialty Design Services: Most designers shy away from specialty materials and functions and the associated design services. However, this can be a lucrative source of income if properly understood.
