A new Michigan law, the Skilled Trades Regulation Act (STRA), merges existing regulations for five industries: electrical, plumbing, mechanical and boilers, building officials, and inspectors. Each industry will operate under a single code administered by the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA). The act will standardize and streamline the application, testing, and renewal process across each industry. Creators are hoping these updates will attract people to the skilled labor positions our state greatly needs.
STRA also increases punishment for individuals who work without a license to protect consumers from disreputable builders.
- First violation will result in a misdemeanor and fine of no more than $500 or/and imprisonment for up to 90 days
- Second violation will also result in a misdemeanor and a fine of no more than $1,000 or/and imprisonment for up to than 1 year
- Third violation will result in a felony and a fine of no more than $25,000 or/and imprisonment for up to than 5 years
NOTE: LARA will continue to wave license application fees for veterans and renewal fees for returning servicepersons.
