Pesticide Emergency Management and Environmental Protection | Arizona Approval #24020

Instructor: Sarah Racine

Safe pesticide use protects both the environment and the people within it from dangerous hazards. This one-credit course is approved by the Arizona Pest Management Division to teach the essentials of safe, legal pesticide application.

The safest way to use pesticides is not to use them at all, which is why pest managers should use alternatives whenever possible. When pesticides are called for, it is important to always use a management plan. Warning signs and notifications are powerful tools for public safety.

Always exercise caution. Service containers allow for safe mixing, transportation and storage of pesticides. Careful planning in application techniques, chemical selection, equipment use, cleanup, disposal, liability and recordkeeping ensures hazards are minimized.

Finally, if the worst happens, this course covers effective emergency responses. Spills, leaks and misapplications may require first aid measures. Learn how to provide simple treatments for exposure to skin, eyes, the respiratory system, and clothing.

After completing this course participants will be able to:

– Identify pesticide safety measures to protect people and the environment from pesticide exposure.
– Describe appropriate ways to handle and apply pesticides.
– Discuss effective equipment selection, safe application techniques and proper practices for cleanup and disposal.
– Explain how to handle pesticide emergencies such as leaks, spills and misapplications.
– Recognize different types of pesticide emergencies and corresponding first aid measures.
