Instructor: Sarah Racine

This two-credit course, approved by the Delaware Department of Agriculture, teaches pest managers how to navigate the unique challenges of forest pest management. Learn crucial principles for working in the forest, including the tools you need to effectively control pests without harming the environment.

This course teaches Worker Protection Standards (WPS) for employers and pest managers and their role in responsible forest management. Lesson material also prepares you to protect yourself from chemical and environmental hazards. Discover the type of PPE that your employers must provide and how to use them. Know where to find important safety information regarding your worksite, especially any pesticide disclosures your employer must post.

When working in the heat, you must take steps to avoid heat stress and other heat-related illnesses. Prepare to mitigate heat exposure and manage heat stress as you work.

The course includes detailed training on your most important tools, including nozzles and sprayers. Calibrate new and existing components using best practices. Take a detailed look at broadcast sprayers, banding calibration and application methods. By properly maintaining your equipment, you will achieve more uniform application and minimize pesticide drift. Finally, learn more techniques to prevent unintended pesticide exposure.
