Review of Forest Pest Management | Michigan DARD Approved

Instructor: Sarah Racine

Approved by the Michigan Department of Agriculture, this course provides two credits of continuing education covering best practices for forest pest management. Navigate the unique challenges of forest management with an eye toward personal and environmental safety.

Site safety begins with a discussion of Worker Protection Standards (WPS). This course explores the safety responsibilities of pest managers and employers and the systems that create a secure work environment. Learn how PPE protects you from pesticide hazards and what equipment your employer must make available. Know where to look for pesticide disclosures and how to interpret that information.

As you work, you may face hazards from hot working conditions. This course helps you recognize heat hazards, including heat-related illnesses. Know what you need to do to avoid injury and treat possible heat stress.

To achieve uniform application results and minimize excessive pesticide exposure, this course explores the tools of your trade. Learn how to maintain and calibrate sprayers and nozzles of all kinds. Evaluate new and existing components, understand application techniques for broadcast sprayers and learn how to perform banding calibration with an in-depth look at your crucial equipment.

After completing this course, participants will be able to:

  • Discuss Worker Protection Standards, including the responsibilities of employers and employees who routinely work with pesticides.
  • Describe methods for pesticide drift prevention.
  • Identify the symptoms of heat-related illnesses and effectively manage the dangers of heat stress.
  • State the equipment and methods for forest pesticide application.
  • Identify key variables in the calibration of pesticide application equipment.
  • Explain calibration methods and techniques.
