Pesticide Emergency Management and Environmental Protection | New Mexico Approval #000771

Instructor: Sarah Racine

Environmental protection and emergency management start with safe and legal pesticide handling. This one-credit course teaches pest managers to minimize dangers and respond to toxic threats during pesticide use.

All pesticides can harm the environment and the public. Pesticide alternatives should be used when possible to bypass toxic hazards. When pesticides must be applied, take every precaution. Start early with a full management plan, notifications and public warning signs.

Choose your chemicals carefully. Store, mix and transport pesticides in approved service containers. Don’t forget to consider your equipment use, application techniques, cleanup and disposal. Even recordkeeping and liability concerns deserve your full attention.

In case of spills, leaks or misapplications, be prepared to respond effectively. This course contains first-response protocols and first aid measures that will help you contain the damage. Save the day by applying your knowledge to skin, eye, clothing and respiratory exposure.

After completing this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify pesticide safety measures to protect people and the environment from pesticide exposure.
  • Recognize different types of pesticide emergencies and corresponding first aid measures.
  • Discuss effective equipment selection, safe application techniques and proper practices for cleanup and disposal.
  • Describe appropriate ways to handle and apply pesticides.
  • Explain how to handle pesticide emergencies such as leaks, spills and misapplications.
