After taking this Tennessee Agricultural Commercial Applicator-approved course, pest managers will become familiar with the hazards of pesticide use. Pesticides are toxic substances that can present dangers to humans, non-target organisms and the environment.

Pest managers must minimize potential damage to the environment and wildlife when applying pesticides. Dangers include human and animal exposure, water contamination and plant destruction. Lessons on the signs of human toxic exposure and methods for testing animal toxicity help prevent and assess hazardous incidents.

Each pesticide belongs to one of three categories based on its toxicity hazard. This course explains the factors that influence toxicity. It also explores the classifications and designations of common pesticides based on their application and the pests they control.

After completing this course, participants will be able to:

• Recognize strategies to minimize excessive pesticide exposure risk to pets, plants and the environment.
• State appropriate measures to take in case of pesticide accidents.
• Explain pesticide toxicity and the different hazards of human pesticide exposure.
• Describe the characteristics of various pesticide formulations.
