Review of Forest Pest Management | Wyoming Approval #2698

Instructor: Sarah Racine

Forest pest management requires unique skills and tools for the best results. This two-credit course is approved by the Wyoming Department of Agriculture to teach key practices that will keep you safe and maximize your effectiveness in controlling forest pests.

Safe forest pest management starts with compliance with Worker Protection Standards (WPS). Learn the duties of Wyoming pest managers and their employers under accepted WPS. Employers must provide acceptable PPE to their employees when pesticides are in use. They must also post pesticide disclosures in view of employees and the public.

Working in a forest environment, pest managers may be exposed to excessive heat. Know how to recognize, prevent and manage heat stress. Become familiar with the symptoms and risks associated with other heat-related illnesses.

To achieve an effective uniform application of pesticides, this course provides an in-depth look at sprayers and nozzles. Discover various kinds of components and learn how to calibrate both new and existing components before use. Finally, application methods and tips for minimizing pesticide drift will help you prevent toxic exposure in humans and non-target organisms.

After completing this course, participants will be able to:

  • Discuss Worker Protection Standards, including the responsibilities of employers and employees who routinely work with pesticides.
  • Identify the symptoms of heat-related illnesses and effectively manage the dangers of heat stress.
  • Explain calibration methods and techniques.
  • State the equipment and methods for forest pesticide application.
  • Describe methods for pesticide drift prevention.
  • Identify key variables in the calibration of pesticide application equipment.
